My name is Janis Gerber and I'm 16 years old. I'm doing an apprenticeship as an IT specialist (application development) at Swisscom. That's also one reason why I created this site, to improve my IT skills. Besides that, as you can clearly see, my biggest hobby is mopeds. I have my own small garage at home and spend a lot of time wrenching. When I'm not in the garage or programming, I also enjoy playing tennis and riding motorcycles.
Back then, when you were young and the only thing you could think about was your moped. Whether it was a Puch, Ciao, Sachs or maybe a Zündapp. These rattling mopeds meant freedom. You didn't need a destination, no route, just the wind in your face, a full tank ⛽ and the smell of 2-stroke mix in your nose.
The first spring days were something very special. You'd pull the moped out of the garage, dust it off, pedal once or twice and the engine would start rattling again. Helmet on, sunglasses on 😎 and off you go. You weren't fast, but you didn't have to be. At least not officially. Because secretly, almost everyone had optimized their ride a bit. Bigger carburetor, open exhaust, a little filing here and there and the pearl would run 35, 40, sometimes even 50 km/h. As long as the racing officials didn't find out 🚓
You'd meet at gas stations, on dirt roads, in front of the ice cream parlor, basically everywhere. Everyone knew everyone. You'd ride together, wrench together and laugh together. When a buddy's tinkered moped broke down again, you'd help of course. It's give and take. Somehow you always made it home. Sometimes you'd improvise with wire, cable ties or whatever else you had lying around.
And then those unforgettable evenings: sitting somewhere in the middle of nowhere, drinks in hand and the moped next to you. No phone, no stress, just the here and now.
Today many things are different. Everything is faster, louder and more hectic. But sometimes, when you pass an old ride or the smell of gasoline hits your nose, you remember those moments again. Your heart beats a little faster, your thoughts drift away. Back to a time that passed far too quickly but remains unforgettable forever.
